Norma Jean Prater Gibbs, 87, of Covington, passed away peacefully Monday, December 30, 2019 at Abbey Hospice. She was born in Greenville, SC to William Eugene and Binnie Lou Charping Prater. Norma was retired from the CDC as Branch Chief of Epidemiology. She was a member of Starrsville UMC where she sang in the choir, then moved her membership to Lake Point Community Church of Eatonton. A strong Christian woman, she always saw the good in everyone and she never spoke an unkind word. Norma enjoyed cooking, vegetable gardening, reading cookbooks and attending to her chickens. She was an avid bird watcher and loved to play the piano. Her sweet nature made her an ultimate care giver of her husband, son and her mother. She loved her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her husband’s family deeply. Norma was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Jack Gibbs; sons, William Craig Gibbs and Brian Keith Gibbs; and parents William Eugene and Binnie Lou Prater. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Bill Means of Covington; granddaughter and spouse, Lauren and Matt Fyock of Atlanta; grandson and spouse John and Mia Means of Covington; great-grandson, James Wylder Means of Covington; great-granddaughter, Livia Tatum Means of Covington. A Private Family Entombment service will take place Friday, January 3, 2020. A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, January 24, 2020 at 12:00 pm in the Chapel of Wheeler Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Rob Raynor and Rev. Danny Harrell officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the service time. Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to Abbey Hospice, 215 Azalea Court, Social Circle, GA 30025.
