Jack Mitchell, 95, resident of Sterling House, Panama City, FL went peacefully home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 12, 2014.Jack was born in Macon, GA and attended Mercer University, where he received his degree in Engineering. He served in World War II, enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1942 and was discharged in 1946. In 1948, he was part of a team who traveled to Great Britain on behalf of the U.S. Air Force to establish the airbases from which to launch the Berlin Air Lift. After returning to work for Strategic Air Command, Warner Robbins, GA, he met his future wife, Josephine McClendon of Monticello, GA. Following their marriage in 1951, they moved to North Hollywood, CA. Jack worked in sound recording for studios in Hollywood and then went to work for Litton Industries. They returned to Georgia in the 1960's, where Jack began working for Lockheed Marietta as a purchasing agent, primarily for the Air Force C-5A Galaxy. Later, he returned to work for the government at Internal Revenue in Chamblee, GA, where he and his wife retired in 1982.After moving to Conyers, GA in the late 1980's, they became active members of the Zion Baptist Church, Covington, GA. Jack entered assisted living in 2010 at Remington House and moved to Panama City in 2011. He resided at Sterling House of Panama City from 2011 until his death.Jack is survived by his two daughters and two sons-in-law, Jackie and Conrad Moon Jr of Panama City FL and Gayle and Lee Magness of Conyers, Ga; his grandchildren, Jayme Coleman, Jarad and Selena Moon, Alison Kennedy, Kathryn Kennedy and Jack Kennedy and his nine great grandchildren Skylar, Joshua, Caleb, Sterling, Asher, Luciano, Kaine, Elijah and Abigail.The family wishes to express special thanks to the team at Emerald Coast Hospice and the Sterling House of Panama City for their years of love and kindnesses.A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Wheeler Funeral Home, Covington, GA. A private family burial will be held following at Prospect United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, please make any donations in Jack Mitchell's name to Zion Baptist Church, 7037 Hwy 212 North, Covington, GA 30016.
